King
Caleb: Reggae
Rasta
Generation Band is a Roots Reggae Band, based in Sacramento,
California. Formerly called the Front Line Rockers, the band
was founded in 1985 by lead singer, Horace Campbell, known
then as Caleb Sweetback, presently known as King Caleb, from
Blue Mountain Peaks, Jamaica. King Caleb formed his first
musical group, the Black Intentions, in 1967 at the age of 14
while attending Tariant Junior Secondary School in Jamaica.
After leaving school in 1968, he formed a duet, the Incredible
Lovemakers, in 1969. By 1972 he had formed a trio with his two
sisters, calling themselves Caleb Sweetback and the Sweets.
Later that year, he and the Sweets relocated to New York,
where he formed an independent record label, Black Spade
Records and Tapes to produce his first 45 recording of the
song "Darling You" and "Zion" backed by
the Jamaican band, Zap Pow, before relocating to the San
Francisco Bay Area.
Performing as the Front Line
Rockers, the band opened for Andrew Tosh's first performance
in the Bay Area at the Stone. They also opened for Mikey Dread
at the VIS presently known as the Justice League in San
Francisco, California. The group recorded their first albumin
1987, "Time Dread," produced by King Caleb on his
label, Black Spade Records and Tapes. Featuring King Caleb's
vocals, the Time Dread album produced several hits, including
the title track "Time Dread" "Earthquake",
Special Guests" and "Poor Man's Prayer" to name
a few.
The band changed its name in
1989 from Front Line Rockers to the Rasta Generation Band.
Still under King Caleb's leadership, with its name change,
came a change of some of its members as well, including the
introduction of a new keyboards/vocalist/songwriter, Miss
Mack. Under its new name, Rasta General Band released a second
album Stand By Jah in 1990. Produced by King Caleb and Miss
Mack, the title cut, "Stand By Jah" a reggae style
remade of Ben E King's "Stand by Me" features King
Caleb on lead vocals. "Stop Crackin' Up", It Ain't
Funny No More" written and sung by Miss Mack sends a
meaningful message to all about the toll the "crack
attack" has taken on our communities. "Smiling
Face", a moving ballad song by King Caleb, features
Ralston Grant on riddim guitar and background vocals, along
with Miss Mack. A third Album, Rasta Far/ Don't Give Up, was
also produced and released in 1990 by King Caleb on Black
Spade Records. The title song, "Don't Give Up; specially
written 20 years ago for King Caleb, inspires and encourages
us all to achieve - just "Don't Give Up!"
"Cocaine Pipe', a powerful song, sung to an upbeat raggae
riddim, lets you know you can't be Roots and Culture and use
drugs too. The Track "Place Called Africa" truly
stirs the soul.
In 1993, Rasta Generation
Band released its first CD, All Killers No Fillers featuring
various artists: King Caleb on "Wanna Live Forever",
Miss Mack on "Love is the Maker" Josey Wales on
"Reggae Talk", Nicodemus chanting "Run Back the
Place", and Papa Leslie singing "Blood, Sweat and
Tears". Other special guests included Fazal Pendergast,
Brimstone, and Queen Lakeyia's first release, "Queen to
Be." In 1996 King Caleb and Miss Mack produced and
released Rasta Generation's second CD, Mama Didn't Tell Me on
Black Spade Records, containing the hits, "Mama Didn't
Tell me", sung by King Caleb, "African Woman",
featuring Ras Jacob, Miss Mack singing "Mellow Nice and
Easy", Nicodemus on "Malcolm X", and Rasta
Song: an original sung by Josie Wales.
King Caleb and the Rasta
Generation Band performs throughout the Bay Area and
California at a variety of festivals, venues, benefits,
colleges and high schools. King Caleb promoter and producer of
over 50 raggae artists on his own record label, Black Spade
Records and Tapes and has released eight albums and CDs from
12987 to 1996, which have gone international. One of the first
bands to perform at San Francisco's Reggae In the Park, Rasta
Generation has played to full houses at the Caribee, Fire
House 7, Full Moon Saloon, Night Break, Last Day Saloon, the
